ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN CONSUMPTION OF SOY, FISH, MEAT, EGGS, AND DAIRY PRODUCTS AT EACH MEALTIME AND ATHENS INSOMNIA SCALE SCORES

Rationale: Insomnia is widely recognized as a global health problem, and functional foods have been developed to support sleep. However, no studies have examined the chrononutritional association between macronutrient intake and insomnia.

Methods: This study investigated the association between protein, fat, and carbohydrate (PFC) intake and insomnia among Japanese adults aged 18–75 years (n = 5,977; 60% women). Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) scores were analyzed using multiple regression models adjusted for age, sex, BMI, chronotype, physical activity, and income. Dietary intake was assessed using the [Asken] food-recording application over a one-month period.

Results: Protein intake at lunch (β = −0.057, p = 0.006) and dinner (β = −0.055, p = 0.04) showed significant negative associations with AIS scores. Meal-specific analyses of protein sources revealed significant associations for dairy intake at breakfast, fish and egg intake at lunch, and meat intake at dinner. When soy products, fish, meat, eggs, and dairy intake at each meal were simultaneously included as independent variables, significant associations were observed for dairy intake at breakfast (β = −0.042, p < 0.001), fish (β = −0.041, p = 0.003) and eggs (β = −0.040, p = 0.003) at lunch, and meat at dinner (β = −0.047, p = 0.002). Compared with the normal sleep group (AIS 0–3), the suspected insomnia group (AIS ≥ 6) had significantly lower intakes of soy (7 vs. 6.5 g), fish (11 vs. 9.5 g), and meat (23.5 vs. 22 g) at lunch; soy (18.8 vs. 16.6 g), fish (23 vs. 16.5 g), and meat (43.5 vs. 40 g) at dinner.

Conclusion: Protein-rich foods may serve as important sources of tryptophan, a precursor of melatonin, a key regulator of sleep. Higher protein intake—particularly eggs and dairy at breakfast and soy, fish, and meat at lunch and dinner—was associated with lower insomnia scores.
