GLIM-DEFINED MALNUTRITION IN REHABILITATION INPATIENTS: PREVALENCE AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS

Rationale: To determine the prevalence of malnutrition, defined by the Global Leadership Initiative for Malnutrition (GLIM) and its association with body composition parameters and demographic factors among rehabilitation inpatients.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 352 hospitalized patients at the Hospital for Rehabilitation – Professional Diseases, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam over a two–week period (from 16 to 30 Sep 2025). Participants were selected based on the following inclusion criteria: aged 18 years or above, admitted to clinical departments and present at the time of the study. Patients with pacemakers or implantable cardioverter defibrillators, skin abnormalities at the measurement sites, those undergoing hemodialysis within 20–30 minutes prior to measurement, and those with invalid or unreliable bioelectrical impedance analysis results were excluded from the study. Patients were assessed for body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis with the BWA 2.0 device.

Results: The prevalence of malnutrition according to the GLIM criteria was 84.7% (298/352), of which 65.1% (194/298) were classified as having severe malnutrition. GLIM-defined malnutrition was associated with age, comorbidity, total body water (TBW), minerals, fat–free Mass (FFM), phase angle (PhA) and skeletal muscle index (SMI).

Conclusion: GLIM–defined malnutrition was frequently observed among rehabilitation inpatients and was significantly associated with body composition parameters. These findings highlight the potential role of body composition assessment as a valuable tool for identifying and evaluating nutritional status, while also guiding individualized nutrition interventions in rehabilitation practice.
