MONITORING THE PRESCRIBED VOLUME VS. INFUSED VOLUME OF ENTERAL NUTRITIONAL THERAPY IN HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS

Rationale: Enteral therapy administered to patients at nutritional risk aims to prevent and treat malnutrition by ensuring adequate energy intake. This study aims to evaluate the caloric adequacy of patients undergoing enteral nutritional therapy using the indicator of prescribed volume x infused volume.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, and retrospective study was conducted with 148 patients of both sexes, aged between 27 and 94 years, with exclusive enteral nutritional therapy, hospitalized between December 2024 and December 2025. Caloric requirements for determining the prescribed volume were calculated using predictive formulas based on the International Guidelines of the European Society for Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition (ESPEN). The goal was established that all patients would be under caloric adequacy, having received at least 80% of their prescribed daily diet volume. 

Results: During the follow-up, we observed that in all months the result of the indicator was higher than the proposed target of 80%. The percentage of patients who met their caloric needs with the therapy, considering the prescribed daily diet volume versus the effectively infused diet volume, was 95.6%. Data collection is performed through consultation of the fluid balance sheet completed by the nursing staff. 

Conclusion: Energy deficit can lead to hospital malnutrition and increase the chances of associated morbidity and mortality. Continuous monitoring by an active interdisciplinary team is fundamental for better management and success of nutritional therapy. The patient's clinical outcome and length of hospital stay are directly influenced by the effectiveness of the nutritional therapy proposed during the hospitalization period.
