Rationale: The significance of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its complications is well recognized. Considering the increasing attention to the interaction between genes and nutrients, this study focused on exploring how zinc consumption through diet may relate to the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) among individuals with varying FTO gene variations.

Methods: In this case-control study, 400 individuals aged 35 to 70 years were enrolled. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The FTO genotype was determined using the Tetra-ARMS PCR method.

Results: Our findings indicate that higher zinc intake is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in individuals with the TT genotype. This association remained statistically significant after adjusting for potential confounders. However, no significant protective effect of zinc intake was observed in individuals with AA/AT genotypes.

Conclusion: The FTO genotype appears to be a critical factor in the modulation of the relationship between the risk of T2D and dietary zinc intake.  Zinc consumption may have a protective effect, particularly among carriers of the TT genotype.  Additional research is required.
