BODY COMPOSITION ALTERATIONS IN WOMEN WITH COPD ASSOCIATED WITH WOOD SMOKE AND TOBACCO EXPOSURE

Rationale: Smoking is the main risk factor for developing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)however, in low-and middle-income countries, wood smoke (WS), is the leading cause of COPD. Loss of strength and muscle mass is common.The objective was to determine the risk of alterations in body composition in COPD according to the type of exposure.
Methods: Cross-sectional study, women with COPD who had exposure to WS >200 hours or smoking index >10 were evaluated; Women exposed to both factors were excluded. Body composition and muscle functionality were evaluated with electrical bioimpedance and dynamometry.
Results: 153 women, 52.9 % had WS. The age of the population was 68.5 ± 12.5 years, and 50.66% had hypertension and 87.97% had abdominal obesity.
Women with exposure to WS were older (72.4 ± 11.08 vs. 64.1 ± 11.76, p = <0.001), and, had more dynapenia (48.15% vs. 22.22%, p=0.001) and sarcopenia (51.85% vs. 22.22%, p<0.001).
Women with exposure to tobacco had a higher BMI (30.58 ± 8.69 vs. 27.67 5.34, p=0.0127) and obesity (45.07% vs. 24.69, p=0.008). Women with exposure to WS had a higher risk of dynapenia (OR:2.13, 95% CI: 0.99 to 4.60, p=0.052), sarcopenia (OR:2.23, 95% CI:1.02 to 4.88, p=0.044), and sarcopenic abdominal obesity (OR: 2.25, 95% CI: 0.99 to 5.10, p=0.051) compared exposure to tobacco adjusted to age

Conclusion: Women with COPD due to exposure to WS have a higher risk of dynapenia, and sarcopenia, so it is important to expand the clinical and preventive approach to this population
