TOLERABILITY AND ACCEPTABILITY OF A HIGH-PROTEIN, LOW-VOLUME ORAL NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT ACROSS TWO PROSPECTIVE STUDIES

Rationale: Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) affects up to 3 million people in the UK1. High-protein, low-volume oral nutritional supplements (ONS) may improve compliance and nutritional outcomes3, but continued evidence on their tolerability and acceptability at one and two servings daily is needed.
Methods: Two prospective, single-arm, longitudinal, multicentre studies evaluated ActaGain Protein Compact (AYMES International; 125ml, 2.6kcal/ml, 20g protein/bottle) in adults with or at risk of DRM. Study 1 (n=16; 28 days; 1 serving/day); assessed gastrointestinal (GI) tolerance, palatability and compliance. Study 2 (n=10; 7 days; 2 servings/day) captured GI symptoms at baseline and day 7. Compliance was calculated as a percentage of the prescribed volume consumed.
Results: Across both studies (n=26), 100% of participants found the product acceptable overall. Study 1: 94% mean compliance with no GI symptoms attributed to the product, 100% rated taste, consistency and convenience acceptable. Study 2: mean compliance 86% (7/10 achieving 100%); 8/10 (80%) showed stable or improved GI tolerance, with all clinicians having no concerns regarding the tolerance and compliance of the product. Palatability was rated positively across all five flavours, with 100% rating volume adequate and convenience acceptable.
Conclusion: Conclusions: Across 26 adults with a variety of complex medical conditions, the supplement demonstrated consistent tolerability, high compliance and strong palatability at both one and two servings daily, supporting its use as a suitable ONS for adults with or at risk of DRM.
