PREVALENCE OF SARCOPENIA AND MALNUTRITION IN OLDER ADULTS IN A GERIATRIC OUTPATIENT CLINIC

Rationale: Malnutrition and sarcopenia represent common conditions in the geriatric population that have a detrimental impact on quality of life and clinical outcomes. The aim of this study is to know the prevalence of malnutrition and sarcopenia in a geriatric outpatient clinics
Methods: Subjects over 75 years old, able to walk without help and who attended to a geriatric outpatient clinics were recruited.
Malnutrition risk was assessed using the malnutrition screening tool (MST) and the diagnosis was according the global leadership initiative malnutrition (GLIM) criteria.
Sarcopenia screening was evaluated with the SARC-F (Strength, Assistance in walking, Rising from a chair, Climbing stairs, and Falls) questionnaire and the probable diagnosis was according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 criteria (EWGSOP2)
Muscle strenght was assessed by grip strength (using a JAMAR dynamometer) and chair stand test.
Results: The study included 20 patients (60 % female, 40% male, mean age 87,8 years).
Risk of malnutrition was identified in 60 % ( MST ≥ 2) and risk of probable sarcopenia in 70 % (SARC-F ≥ 4) of the patients.
Malnutrition was detected in 60 % by GLIM and the prevalence of probable sarcopenia was 60% by EWGSOP2.
30 % of patients presented sarcopenia and malnutrition.
Nutritional interventions (dietary advice, physical exercise and/or oral nutritional supplementation) were reported in all patients with sarcopenia and/or malnutrition.
Conclusion: The study showed a high prevalence and overlap between sarcopenia and malnutrition in older adults.
