POTENTIAL EFFECTS OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS ON TREATMENT OUTCOMES IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS DIAGNOSED WITH B-ALL: A PROSPECTIVE RANDOMIZED STUDY

Rationale:  Since malnutrition and disease-related malnutrition pose a significant risk for pediatric patients diagnosed with B-ALL, assessment of nutritional status at the time of hospital admission is crucial(1,2).

 This study aimed to investigate the nutritional status of newly diagnosed pediatric patients with B-ALL to prevent and/or treat malnutrition and provide education about food-drug interactions

Methods:  This prospective, randomized controlled, single-center study was conducted in Istanbul. Pediatric patients included in the study (intervention group) and (control group) were compared in terms of nutritional status, anthropometric, biochemical, and hematological data before starting treatment. Responses to treatment were followed for 6 months.

Results:  In surviving patients, the mean anthropometric, biochemical, and hematological data were higher than those in patients who died. Significant differences were found in bone marrow remission (63.5% in the intervention group and 36.5% in the control group), treatment delay (7.3% and 92.7%), and mortality (29.5% and 70.5%). Complications such as febrile neutropenia were more common in the control group.

Conclusion:  Adequate nutrition and regular education are important determinants of treatment planning, complication rates, and ultimate outcomes in pediatric patients diagnosed with B-ALL.
