ASSESSMENT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN TREATED FOR CANCER

Rationale: Treatment for developmental cancers often lasts several monthsMultidrug chemotherapy is commonly used.Surgery and radiotherapy are used less frequently. In the developmental age group, feeding disorders during treatment affect nutritional status,but can also cause growth retardation.The aim of this study was to assess growth centiles in children before and after oncological treatment.

Methods: The records of 139 children, hospitalized in 2021-2023 at the Department of Pediatrics, Hematology, and Oncology of University Hospital No. 1 in Bydgoszcz with cancer, were analyzed. Growth percentiles at diagnosis and during treatment were examined by gender, age, treatment duration, ICU stay, bone marrow transplantation, and type of nutrition (enteral or parenteral). Patients aged 0-5 years were compared with WHO growth charts, while those aged 5-17 years were compared with growth charts from the Institute of Mother and Child. Growth chart changes during treatment were compared with those before treatment. Results were analyzed using the chi-square test, Mann-Whitney test, and Kruskal-Wallis tests.

Results: Analyzing growth before and after treatment revealed statistically significant differences. Treatment duration and age also had a statistically significant effect. Detailed results are presented in the table.

Conclusion: Statistically significant growth was found between the start and end of treatment in both children and adolescents. Both age at treatment onset and overall treatment duration were influential factors.
