ASSESSMENT OF BLOOD LIPID PROFILE AND SATURATED FAT INTAKE IN OBESE AND NON-OBESE INDIVIDUALS

Rationale: Obesity is a condition that may adversely affect the blood lipid profile. This study aimed to evaluate the blood lipid profile and saturated fat intake in obese (OB group) and non-obese (NOB group) individuals.
Methods: This study was conducted in the Cardiology Department of Ankara Akay Hospital with individuals aged 19–65 years, including obese (n=45) and non-obese (n=45) participants. Lipid parameters (LDL-cholesterol (mg/dL), HDL-cholesterol (mg/dL), and triglycerides (mg/dL)) of the participants were obtained from routine laboratory tests performed during clinical follow-up and were retrospectively recorded from the hospital information management system. Saturated fat intake was assessed using 24-hour dietary recall records.
Results: LDL-cholesterol levels were 118.2±27.00 in the OB group and 111.6±29.14 in the NOB group (p>0.05). HDL-cholesterol levels were 48.4±12.28 and 56.2±10.18 in the OB and NOB groups, respectively (p<0.05). Triglyceride levels were 153.2±56.75 in the OB group and 98.5±50.02 in the NOB group (p<0.001). Mean daily saturated fat intake in women was 25.4±11.15 in the OB group and 22.2±9.72 in the NOB group (p>0.05), while in men it was 34.4±12.02 and 25.2±12.17, respectively (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Significant differences were observed between the groups in terms of HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and in saturated fat intake among men. These findings suggest that obesity is associated with adverse lipid alterations and may influence dietary fat consumption patterns, particularly in men.
