OSTEOPOROSIS IN TYPE 2 DIABETES.

Rationale: To determine the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis among patients with T2DM.
Methods: Fifty patients with confirmed T2DM were enrolled.Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) of the lumbar spine,hip and forearm was performed. Laboratory assessments included glucose, HbA1c,vitamin D, parathyroid hormone(PTH),calcium,phosphorus,alkaline phosphatase,and creatinine.Correlation analyses were conducted to identify associations between laboratory parameters and lumbar spine BMD.
Results: The mean age of participants was 62.6 ± 8.25 years, and mean BMI was 29.4 ± 4.88 kg/m². Osteopenia was detected in 46.9% and osteoporosis in 32.7% of patients; only approximately 20% had normal BMD. No significant correlations were observed between lumbar BMD and HbA1c (r = 0.027, p = 0.853) or vitamin D levels (r = 0.124, p = 0.402). PTH demonstrated a significant negative correlation with lumbar BMD (r = −0.363, p = 0.010).
Conclusion: Reduced BMD was highly prevalent among patients with T2DM.Elevated PTH levels were associated with lower lumbar BMD,highlighting the potential role of secondary hyperparathyroidism in diabetic bone loss and supporting routine bone health assessment in T2DM patients.
