Rationale: Older adults experience changes in dietary intake due to biopsychological factors. In outpatient healthcare settings, understanding dietary patterns is essential for identifying nutritional risks and guiding interventions. We aimed to assess the dietary patterns and their relationship with nutritional parameters in an outpatient healthcare setting.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study. We included adults >60 years. Nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF), anthropometry, and a 24-hour dietary recall, based on a database from 2024 to 2026. Patients with missing data were excluded from the analysis. Principal component analysis was performed to identify dietary patterns; we categorized them into tertiles based on adherence to the main component, compared groups across tertiles, and used multinomial logistic regression models to evaluate associations between dietary patterns and nutritional variables.
Results: A total of 85 patients were included (mean age 76 years; 73% women). Primary component was characterized by higher in animal protein and vegetables and lower in fruits and cereals. Across tertiles, a trend toward a better appetite was observed in those with higher adherence. In multivariable analysis, the higher adherence to this pattern (tertile 3) was associated with a lower likelihood of reduced handgrip strength (RRR 0.06, 95% CI 0.006 – 0.62); trends were observed for associations with dementia and body weight.
Conclusion: Greater adherence to a dietary pattern characterized by higher animal protein and vegetable intake and lower fruit and carbohydrate consumption was associated with better muscle strength in older adults. These findings highlight the potential relevance of dietary patterns to nutritional outcomes; further studies with larger samples are needed.
