Rationale: To analyze the effect of regular supplementation with multivitamin and mineral tablets on the severity of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) symptoms in the Chinese population.
Methods: From October 2023 to December 2024, a total of 580 adults were recruited from hospitals or communities in Guangzhou. Participants were divided into a study group (regularly took multivitamin and mineral tablets, n=161) and a control group (did not take multivitamin and mineral tablets, n=419). A retrospective questionnaire survey was conducted to collect general information and data on URTI, including infection symptoms and their severity, medication use during infection, hospital stay duration, and vaccination status.
Results: The group that regularly took multivitamin and mineral tablets had a significantly shorter duration of cough, milder respiratory symptoms such as nasal congestion and runny nose, and milder non-respiratory symptoms such as moderate-to-high fever and myalgia. All associations were statistically significant (all P < 0.05).
Conclusion: Regular supplementation with multivitamin and mineral tablets for ≥3 months prior to infection can effectively alleviate common symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection.
