IMPACT OF REGULAR NUTRITIONAL FOLLOW-UP ATTENDANCE ON WEIGHT LOSS AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS AFTER SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY

Rationale: Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) is an effective treatment for morbid obesity, and regular postoperative follow-up may enhance weight loss outcomes. This study evaluated the impact of regular nutritional follow-up during the first year after SG on weight loss and nutritional status.

Methods: Fifty patients with morbid obesity (mean age: 35.9±14.1 years; mean BMI:44.35±7.47 kg/m2)  who underwent SG were followed for one year. Patients were initially interviewed one week postoperatively and were subsequently scheduled for follow-up visits at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. At each visit, anthropometry and blood samples were collected. Dietary intake was also assessed using a 24-hour dietary recall. Patients were then grouped according to their attendance into regular follow-up (at least three postoperative nutritional follow-ups; ≥75%) and irregular follow-up (<75% attendance to the postoperative nutritional follow-ups).

Results: A dramatic change in body weight at one month, three months, six months and one year were observed (mean±SD: 104.09±21.62 kg, 92.34±17.66 kg, 82.39±14.76 kg and 77.52±14.14 kg; respectively). There were no significant differences in body weight loss, Excess Body Weight Loss (EBWL%), dietary intake, and blood biomarkers between patients with regular and irregular follow-ups.

Conclusion: The study confirmed the beneficial effect of SG on weight loss. However, patients who attended regular follow-ups did not achieve a greater one-year weight loss or nutritional status improvements compared with patients with irregular follow-ups. Further work is needed to optimize the postoperative follow-ups to achieve greater effects on weight loss and nutritional status after the SG.
