Rationale: In oncology, nutritional assessment should integrate muscle strength, physical function and muscle mass. We evaluated the correlation between dynamometry, functional tests, nutritional ultrasound (NU) and bioimpedance analysis (BIA) to improve the identification of sarcopenia.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, approved by the local ethics committee, oncology patients underwent anthropometry, functional assessment and body composition analysis by NU and BIA.
Results: A total of 517 patients were included (57.8% males), with a median age of 68.0 (13) years. The most common tumour types were carcinoma (48.5%) and adenocarcinoma (48.2%), mainly in the upper digestive tract (30.4%), lung (25.3%) and head and neck (12.1%). Correlation analysis showed acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.712). Moderate associations were observed among morphological parameters (BCM–RF_CSA: r = 0.52; RF_CSA–RF_y_Axis: r = 0.57). Functionally, TUG was inversely correlated with the 30-second squat (r = −0.53), while 5STS showed a strong negative correlation (r = −0.75) and a positive association with TUG (r = 0.63). Morphological variables showed weak-to-moderate correlations with function (BCM–TUG: r = −0.37).

Conclusion: Morphological and functional parameters show complementary relationships in oncology patients. Integrating BIA, NU and functional tests improves sarcopenia identification and supports a morphofunctional assessment.
