Rationale: This study aimed to assess the quality and reliability of Turkish-language YouTube videos on “intermittent fasting”.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on December 1, 2023, including 115 YouTube videos retrieved using the keywords “intermittent fasting” and “intermittent hunger”. Videos that met the inclusion criteria were reviewed by a trained research team consisting of 14 final-year Nutrition and Dietetics students. Videos were categorized according to presenter type as; doctor, dietitian, and others. Reliability and quality were assessed using Interaction Index, Global Quality Score (GQS), modified DISCERN (m-DISCERN), Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) criteria, Audio-Visual Quality (AVQ), and a researcher-developed The Intermittent Fasting Knowledge Assessment Score (IFKAS).
Results: A total of 115 videos were included in the analysis. Of the included videos, 31.3% were presented by doctors, 24.3% by dietitians, and 44.3% by others.Inter-rater reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), with values ≥ 0.755 indicating good agreement. Videos presented by doctors had higher interaction index compared to dietitians and others. Videos presented by dietitians had higher IFKAS and JAMA scores compared to those presented by doctors and others. GQS, M-DISCERN, and AVQ scores were lower in videos produced by others. Correlation analysis revealed positive associations between GQS, M-DISCERN, IFKAS, and AVQ scores, while no association was observed between IFKAS and the interaction index.
Conclusion: The quality and reliability of “intermittent fasting” related YouTube videos varied considerably across sources. Professionally created content was more accurate, emphasizing the importance of expert involvement in digital health communication.
