JUSSARA (EUTERPE EDULIS MART.) SUPPLEMENTATION DURING PREGNANCY REDUCES TRANS FAT–INDUCED HYPOTHALAMIC INFLAMMATION IN MALE OFFSPRING

Rationale: Trans fatty acid (TFA) exposure during pregnancy and lactation is linked to adverse metabolic and neuroinflammatory programming in offspring. Evaluating whether anthocyanin-rich Jussara pulp can mitigate hypothalamic inflammation is clinically relevant for maternal nutrition strategies. 

Methods: 24 primiparous Wistar rats (12 weeks old) were mated and, from gestation day 1, randomly assigned to four diets: control (C), control plus 0.5% Jussara pulp (CJ), trans fat–enriched (T), or trans fat plus Jussara pulp (TJ). Diets were maintained throughout pregnancy and lactation. Male offspring were analyzed at weaning (21 days). Growth parameters, serum biochemical markers [glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)], and hypothalamic cytokines [interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)] were measured. Statistical analyses were performed with analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey’s post hoc test (p ≤ 0.05). 

Results: Maternal Jussara supplementation increased hypothalamic IL-10 expression, improved IL-10/TNF-α ratios, and reduced TNF-α protein levels compared with TFA-fed offspring. Supplemented groups showed lower fasting glucose, triglycerides, and total cholesterol, while HDL-C remained unchanged. CJ offspring exhibited reduced body weight gain. Jussara pulp demonstrated strong antioxidant activity, efficiently scavenging peroxyl radicals in both homogeneous and cellular assays. 

Conclusion: Maternal supplementation with anthocyanin-rich Jussara pulp attenuates hypothalamic inflammation and improves metabolic outcomes in male offspring exposed to TFA. These findings support its potential as a functional food in maternal nutrition to counteract the deleterious effects of trans fat exposure during early developmental programming.
