Rationale: This study was conducted based on the assumption that nutritional methods and abdominal massage may influence gastrointestinal system functions in patients receiving enteral nutrition.
Methods: This research is a randomized controlled experimental study with 4 groups, comprising patients receiving continuous and bolus enteral nutrition, assigned to experimental and control groups. The study was conducted with 200 patients who were hospitalized in an intensive care unit, met the inclusion criteria, and were receiving enteral nutrition (calculated using G*Power 3.1.9.7). In the experimental groups, abdominal massage was applied twice daily (morning and evening) during the first 7 days of enteral feeding. During follow-up, measurements included GRV, abdominal circumference, and the frequency of distension, vomiting, and defecation. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS (Mann-Whitney U test), with a p-value<0.05 considered statistically significant.
Results: The primary admission diagnoses of patients in the intensive care unit were cerebrovascular disease (37%), and metabolic disorders (20.5%). In Table 1, GRV values in the experimental groups were significantly lower than those in the control groups for both continuous and bolus feeding methods (p<0.05). In continuous feeding, there were no statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups in terms of vomiting and distension (p>0.05).

Conclusion: Abdominal massage applied twice daily is beneficial in patients receiving continuous and bolus enteral nutrition by improving gastrointestinal symptoms such as GRV, distension, and nausea/vomiting.
