THE EFFECT OF TIME-RESTRICTED EATING ON ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS IN INDIVIDUALS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES

Rationale: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of time-restricted eating (TRE) on anthropometric measurements in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: The study included 48 individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), aged 18–65 years, whose medical treatment was suitable for time-restricted eating and who were referred by a physician. A total of 34 participants completed the study. Participants received diabetes-appropriate nutrition education from a dietitian and followed a 12-week time-restricted eating plan between 12:00 and 20:00, with 2 main meals and 2 snacks and no energy restriction. Anthropometric measurements, including neck, waist, and hip circumferences, were assessed with a non-stretchable tape at baseline and at the end of the study. Body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio were calculated, and data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0.
Results: The individuals had a mean age of 52,7±10,7 years, with 32,4% male and 67,6% female. After 12 weeks, significant reductions were observed from baseline to post-intervention in body weight (88,4±17,8 kg to 83,3±16,8 kg; p<0,001), BMI (32,7±6,6 kg/m2 to 30,9±6,1 kg/m2; p<0,001), neck circumference (37,2±3,6 cm to 35,8±3,1 cm; p<0,001), waist circumference (107,8±11,4 cm to 99±11,7 cm; p<0,001), hip circumference (115,9±16,4 cm to 109,9±14,7 cm; p<0,001), waist-to-hip ratio (0,92±0,1 to 0,89±0,1; p=0,014), and waist-to-height ratio (0,7±0,1 to 0,6±0,1; p<0,001).

Conclusion: This study found that TRE led to significant reductions in anthropometric measurements in individuals with T2DM over a short period of 12 weeks. Although short-term (TRE) under physician and dietitian supervision appears to be beneficial in individuals with type 2 diabetes, longer-term and larger-scale studies are needed to evaluate its long-term effects.
