EFFECT OF NUTRITION EDUCATION ON INFLAMMATORY MARKERS AND CLINICAL OUTCOMES IN INDIVIDUALS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES UNDERGOING HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY

Rationale: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) effectively treats Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) wounds. While medical nutrition therapy is known to accelerate healing via inflammation regulation, evidence for adding structured nutrition education to HBOT is limited. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of nutrition education on clinical and inflammatory parameters in T2DM patients receiving HBOT.
Methods: T2DM individuals aged 40-80 years receiving HBOT were included. Those with severe systemic diseases were excluded from the study. The education group received two sessions of diabetes nutrition education supported by visual materials at 15-day intervals, while the control group was followed without intervention. At baseline and on day 30, nutritional habits, visceral adiposity index (VAI), biochemical and clinical findings, and systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII) were compared in terms of intra-group and inter-group changes.
Results: The reduction in wound size was greater in the education group (from 34.50 cm2 to 7.74 cm2) compared to the control group (-26.7 cm2 vs -2.8 cm2, p<0.001). Significant decreases in CRP (p=0.03) and SII (p=0.04) levels were observed in the education group. In contrast, inflammatory parameters did not change in the control group (p>0.05). Although VAI values showed a decreasing trend in the education group, this change was not found to be statistically significant (p>0.05). Total fat intake decreased in the education group on the 30th day compared to baseline (p=0.05).

Conclusion: Nutrition education provided to individuals with Type 2 Diabetes significantly improves inflammatory markers such as SII and CRP by reducing total fat intake, while contributing to an improving trend in visceral adiposity.
