Rationale: This study aims to evaluate the physical activity status, sleep duration, eating habits, and Mediterranean diet adherence in adolescents, and to assess their relationships.
Methods: The study used a face-to-face survey among 179 adolescents aged 10-19 years (30.2% male; 69.8% female). In the survey, participants' anthropometric information was obtained as body weight (kg), height (cm), and BMI (kg/m2), the MET score was calculated for physical activity status, the frequency of main and snack meals was questioned for nutritional habits, and the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Scale (MEDAS) was used for diet quality. Self-reported sleep duration (hours/night) was recorded. IBM SPSS was used to evaluate the data.
Results: The average age of adolescents was 15.5 ± 2.06 years, and the average BMI was found to be 21.09 ± 3.9 kg/m². 34.6% of participants were classified as inactive (<600 MET), 59.8% as minimally active, and 5.6% as active. Mediterranean diet adherence was low in 27.4%, moderate in 62.6%, and high in 10.1%. 39.7% of adolescents skipped meals, with lunch the most frequently skipped. 68.2% of participants slept less than 8 hours. No significant relationships were found between physical activity level, Mediterranean diet adherence, and BMI (p > 0.05). Mediterranean diet adherence did not differ across physical activity levels (p=0.064) or sleep duration categories (p=0.466). In contrast, BMI differed significantly by sleep duration ( p=0.025), with adolescents who slept less than 8 hours having higher BMI values.
Conclusion: The study showed that insufficient sleep is common among adolescents, and shorter sleep duration is associated with higher BMI, highlighting sleep duration as an important modifiable target for preventing adolescent obesity.
