Rationale: Unhealthy dietary patterns and co-occurring behavioral health risk factors (BHRFs) are not consistently assessed in hospital settings, despite being highly established modifiable risk factors for cancer and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This study examines the intake of key dietary components, the proportions of patients with BHRFs, namely unhealthy diet, insufficient physical activity, alcohol consumption and tobacco use prior to hospitalization and derives implications for the prevention of NCDs in clinical settings.
Methods: Patients (N=788) between 18-64 years of age admitted to one of five departments of the University Medicine Hospital Greifswald will be included in a randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of individually tailored, theory-driven automatized feedback on the four BHRFs. Measurements include validated self-assessment tools and a custom dietary screener. Descriptives such as presence of NCDs and other patient characteristics will be assessed.
Results: Data from a previous pilot study (n=256) suggests following intake of nutrients per day (mean±SD): 1086.8±624.2 kcal fat, 18.7±10.0 g fiber, 5.6±3.2 g salt, 64.2±65.7 g sugar. All participants (100%) reported at least one nutrient intake not meeting current national recommendations. Sixty-two percent reported multiple (≥2) BHRFs with a prevalence of: 87%, 34%, 26% and 39% for unhealthy diet (indicated by vegetable and fruit intake), insufficient physical activity, alcohol consumption, and tobacco use, respectively. Preliminary baseline data from the ongoing randomized controlled trial will be presented.
Conclusion: The findings of the pilot trial support the need for clinical interventions targeting unhealthy diet and other BHRFs associated with NCDs in general hospitals.
