NUTRITIONAL INTERVENTION AND OUTCOMES IN COLORECTAL CANCER PATIENTS

Rationale: Malnutrition is highly prevalent among patients with colorectal cancer and is associated with increased morbidity, reduced treatment tolerance, and impaired quality of life. Nutritional interventions have been proposed to improve clinical outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of implementing a structured nutritional program on clinical and nutritional outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer.

Methods: A retrospective comparative study was conducted including 50 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Patients were divided into two groups: 20 patients who received a structured nutritional intervention (dietary counseling, oral supplementation, and regular follow-up) and 30 patients who received standard care without a formal nutritional program. Data collected included cancer stage, weight variation, treatment tolerance, complication rates, and hospitalization duration. Nutritional status was assessed using body weight changes and clinical indicators of malnutrition. Comparative analyses were performed between the two groups.

Results: Patients who received structured nutritional support demonstrated significantly better outcomes compared to those receiving standard care. The intervention group showed improved weight stability, with fewer cases of significant weight loss. These patients exhibited better treatment tolerance, with fewer dose reductions and delays. The rate of treatment-related complications, particularly infections, was lower in the intervention group. Hospital stays were also shorter compared to patients without nutritional support. In contrast, patients without a structured program experienced higher rates of malnutrition, poorer tolerance to therapy, and increased complications.

Conclusion: Implementation of a structured nutritional program in colorectal cancer patients is associated with improved nutritional status, enhanced treatment tolerance, and reduced complications.
