EVALUATING A PLANT-BASED ORAL NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT USING SOYA BEAN ISOLATE: A SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE TO DAIRY-BASED DRINKS FOR CLINICAL NUTRITION

Rationale: Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are a key component in the management of disease-related malnutrition (DRM). Although dairy‑based ONS are appropriate for many patients, they are not suitable for individuals following plant-based diets or those who avoid dairy for cultural, ethical, or medical reasons. Soy‑based ONS provide a high-quality, plant-derived protein option that may support the dietary management of DRM.
Methods: n=15 adult patients with or at risk of DRM (mean age: 57 years; BMI: 18.3 kg/m2) received at least 200ml (range: 200-400ml) of a vegan suitable, soya-bean based, ready-to-drink, 2.0kcal/ml ONS (Actagain 2.0 Plant-Powered, AYMES) for 7-days. Compliance, palatability, gastrointestinal (GI) tolerance and safety were assessed at baseline (day 0) and at the intervention endpoint (day 7).
Results: Compliance to ActaGain 2.0 Plant-Powered was good versus dietetic prescription (mean 86%), palatability was rated as overall acceptable by 80% of participants and GI tolerance remained stable with no adverse or serious adverse events reported.
Conclusion: ActaGain 2.0 Plant-Powered represents a nutritionally adequate, palatable, and well-tolerated alternative to dairy-derived and other plant‑based ONS formulations. Soybean sourcing and processing confer environmental advantages over dairy production, including improved land and water-use efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The Tetra Pak packaging—comprising 63% plant‑based renewable materials and using four times less plastic than HDPE bottles—further contributes to an estimated 11% reduction in carbon emissions. This enhances the suitability of Actagain 2.0 Plant-Powered in diverse clinical settings, supporting patients with dietary restrictions as well as those with ethical or sustainability-driven preferences.
