Rationale: There is a need to evaluate the efficacy GLP-1 analogues, on weight loss and body composition, over the long term. This study’s objective is to determine the effects of Liraglutide on weight loss and fat reduction over a 12-month period, with a specific focus on gender differences.

Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted with 20 adolescents (13 females, 7 males) treated with Liraglutide over 12 months. Female mean age 15.1±3.3 and male mean age 15.1±2.7.  Anthropometric measures: Body Mass Index (BMI) and BMI Z score; and body composition with bioelectrical impedance análisis, were measured at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months. Statistical analysis was performed using the Friedman Test.

Results: Significant reductions were observed in the female, male and total group for BMI BMI Z-score, body fat mass, percent body mass and visceral fat level (p<0.001).

Total skeletal muscle mass remained stable, although a slight non significant decrease was noted in females (p = 0.017), males showed a likewise trend toward skeletal muscle mass gain (p=0,5).

Conclusion: Liraglutide treatment over 12 months effectively reduces weight, total and visceral adiposity in adolescents. The nonsignificant decrease and increase in muscle mass for females and males respectively, may suggest the need of studying this variable with a greater sample in the future, find out it’s significance and guide treatment protocols then, according to gender.
