Rationale: Pro-inflammatory dietary patterns are linked to obesity and may contribute to early visceral fat accumulation. This study evaluated the association between the Children's Dietary Inflammatory Index (c-DII) and visceral adiposity.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 310 Mexican children aged 6–14 years. Body composition, including visceral fat area (VFA), was assessed by a multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis. Dietary intake was evaluated using a validated 7-day food frequency questionnaire. BMI-age was classified using CDC percentile references. The c-DII was analyzed in tertiles and VFA was evaluated as elevated cut off points derived from receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis in the study population. Logistic regression models were performed.
Results: Participants in the highest (most pro-inflammatory) c-DII tercile were associated with increased odds of obesity (OR = 1.36; 95% CI: 1.03–1.80; p = 0.030). Higher c-DII was also associated with increased odds of elevated VFA (OR = 1.33; p = 0.042).
Conclusion: Higher dietary inflammatory potential was associated with obesity and increased visceral adiposity, highlighting its potential role as a modifiable factor early in life.
