Rationale: We would like to assess if QoL of patients on HPN can be improved by portable nutritional kits with pumps.
Methods: Cross-sectional study, 102 adults receiving HPN with portable infusion pumps completed the WHOQOL-BREF and an author-designed questionnaire addressing pump usability, daily functioning, mobility, work, travel, complications, and treatment burden.
Results: Most patients reported that pumps improved daily functioning (96%), social activity (95%), travel planning (96%), and work-related functioning (84.3%). Perceived health improvement since pump-assisted HPN was reported by 85.3%. Night-time pump burden was associated with lower psychological (p=0.004), social (p=0.001), and environmental scores (p<0.001). Longer infusion time correlated with poorer psychological (r=-0.433; p<0.001) and environmental quality of life (r=-0.280; p=0.007), and worse self-rated health (r=-0.275; p=0.008).
Conclusion: Portable infusion pumps support mobility, independence, travel, and work participation in most adults receiving HPN. However, quality of life remains strongly influenced by treatment burden, particularly night-time disturbance and prolonged infusion
