Rationale: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) results from antibiotic-induced disruption of intestinal microbial homeostasis. This study evaluated the acceptability and efficacy of two different daily dosages of the multi-strain probiotic Vivomixx neo® 9 supplied by Mendes SA in adults with a history of AAD, focusing on GI symptom relief and Quality of Life (QoL).
Methods: In this 2-week, randomized, open-label study, 40 adults (aged >18) with a history of AAD were randomized into Group A (1 sachet/day) and Group B (2 sachets/day) during and after antibiotic therapy. Participants recorded daily stool consistency (Bristol Stool Form Scale - BSFS). GI symptoms were assessed using a weekly questionnaire, while fatigue and QoL were evaluated at baseline and end-of-study using validated tools (CFQ, WHOQOL-BREF, and EQ-5D).
Results: The intervention was well-tolerated, with zero incidence of AAD across both groups. After 2 weeks of intervention, both groups showed significant improvement in self-reported GI symptoms, including abdominal pain, heartburn flatulence and hunger pains, while there was a measurable decrease in fatigue levels. Additionally, participants with extreme baseline BSFS values demonstrated significant normalization.
Conclusion: Daily supplementation with Vivomixx neo® 9 is well-tolerated and effective in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea while mitigating gastrointestinal symptoms. The observed normalization of stool consistency suggests that this multi-strain probiotic formula plays a protective role during antibiotic therapy.
