Rationale: One of the goals of enteral nutrition (EN) is to improve quality of life (QoL). The primary objective was to measure QoL using the NUTRIQoL® score at 1 month after hospital discharge with home enteral nutrition (HEN). Secondary objectives were to measure QoL at 3 months, to compare changes in QoL between 1 and 3 months, and to compare characteristics likely to influence QoL

Methods: The prospective, observational, cross-sectional and longitudinal study was conducted at the University Hospital of Limoges between October 2023 and June 2024. EN patients were asked to complete the NUTRIQoL® score at 1 month and 3 months after hospital discharge. General, nutritional, pathological and information concerning management of EN were collected

Results: 32 patients were included, with a median NUTRIQoL® score of 60.5 (53.8-68.3) at 1 month after NEAD discharge. The NUTRIQoL® score was significantly lower in cases of ENT cancer (p=0.023), digestive disorders on HEN (p=0.026) and exclusive HEN (p=0.023). 11 patients remained on NE until reassessment at 3 months. In this subgroup, the median NUTRIQoL® score was 55 (51-60) at 1 month and 53 (50-68) at 3 months. In these 11 patients, the NUTRIQoL® score at 1 month was significantly lower in cancer cases (p=0.002), especially in ENT (p=0.023) and exclusive NE (p=0.019). Significantly lower NUTRIQoL® score at 3 months were observed in men (p=0.037), in cancer under surveillance (p=0.036), NE for more than 6 months (p=0.038), presence of gastrostomy or jejunostomy tube (p=0.003) and tube extraction (p=0.038)

Conclusion: The QoL of patients undergoing NEAD in this study seems to be good in relation to the NUTRIQoL® score. Certain parameters seem to influence the QoL like the presence of cancer, especially ENT cancer, the continuation of NE during cancer surveillance, the exclusive nature of NE, the use of stomy tubes and side effects
