Rationale: Malnutrition is a prevalent issue globally among patients undergoing hemodialysis. Identifying factors such as age, sex, nutrition counseling, and oral nutritional supplement intake associated with malnutrition is essential. This knowledge enables healthcare workers to target high-risk patients effectively, initiating and maintaining tailored nutrition care plans for improved outcomes.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional design involving 108 participants. Data were collected through interviews using a structured Data Collection Form. Data were analyzed using frequency and percentage, chi-square test for univariate analysis and multiple logistic regression for multivariate analysis.
Results: A significant majority of participants (71.3%) were found to be malnourished, with higher prevalence among those aged 65 years and older (89.5%), female (73.2%), and using oral nutrition supplements (93.5%). Age of 65 years and older (adjOR = 7.494, 95% CI [2.545 - 22.071], P < 0.001) and use of ONS (adjOR = 7.151, 95% CI [1.433–35.694], P < 0.001) were significantly associated with malnutrition while sex and nutrition counseling were not.

Conclusion: Our study revealed a high prevalence of malnutrition among patients undergoing hemodialysis. We observed significant associations between malnutrition and both age and the use of oral nutrition supplements. However, it's important to recognize that the association with ONS use may primarily stem from individuals responding to pre-existing concerns about malnutrition. Given these insights, it's essential to implement comprehensive nutrition screening, assessment, and care plans for managing hemodialysis patients to ensure better health outcomes.
