Rationale: In the district of Spandau in Berlin, Germany, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents (CA) is particularly high. In its initial pilot phase, the JoDi project aimed to raise awareness of healthy eating among this population.
Methods: From September to December 2025, in cooperation with the Fidelio Spandau exercise program for CA with overweight and obesity, a JoDi nutrition session was offered once a month by a certified nutritionist to three age groups (6-8; 9-11; 12-15 years). In addition, a session for parents and two separate supervised cooking sessions were offered. Participants’ acceptance was assessed using a four-point scale (1=strongest). A self-designed questionnaire measured mean subjective pre- vs. post-session i) knowledge of and ii) interest in healthy eating as well as iii) relevance of healthy eating to one’s own health, each with a five-point Likert scale (5=strongest). Acceptance was evaluated descriptively. Awareness scores were evaluated using a t-test.
Results: 196 persons participated in JoDi-sessions (154 CA, of whom 75 participated more than once; 27 parents). Acceptance of JoDi-sessions for CA, parents and cooking were rated with 1.5 (n=154), 1.0 (n=23) and 1.1 (n=15) respectively (overall mean=1.4; n=196). Subjective awareness could only be assessed in a subset (n=27 from total n=46). Significant increases were observed in the subset for the pre- vs. post-session mean subjective awareness scores for knowledge (3.15 vs. 4.19), interest (3.37 vs. 4.07) and relevance of healthy eating to one´s own health (4.19 vs. 4.67; for all p<0.01).
Conclusion: The positive results yielded from the JoDi-Pilot project demonstrate successful implementation and suitability of such a community-based intervention for increasing nutrition awareness in the targeted population.
