HIGH PREVALENCE OF OBESITY AND UNFAVORABLE MACRONUTRIENT DISTRIBUTION IN WOMEN FROM VERA CRUZ

Rationale: Inadequate dietary patterns, characterized by low consumption of fresh foods, high consumption of ultra-processed foods, and macronutrient imbalance are associated with adverse cardiometabolic outcomes. Vera Cruz has limited health and educational infrastructure, contributing to high burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Methods: Cross-sectional observational study included 217 women (≥18 years). Anthropometric data were collected; subsample (n=57) completed 24-hour dietary recall to estimate food intake. Statistical analyses performed using Stata 17.0; Kruskal-Wallis test; significance level p≤0.05.

Results: Among the subsample (n=57), prevalence of normal weight, overweight, and obesity was 19.3%, 36.8%, and 43.8%, respectively. Significant association was observed between total energy intake and BMI (p=0.042), with mean intakes of 1.482 kcal in normal-weight, 2.291 kcal in overweight, and 1.935 kcal in obese women. Significant differences were also observed in carbohydrates (P=0.007) and proteins (P<0.001) percentage distributions according to waist circumference (WC). Among women with normal WC (<80cm; 10.5%), carbohydrates and proteins contribution of total energy intake (TEI) was 35% 32.3%, respectively. Those with increased WC (≥80 and <88cm; 12.2%), carbohydrates accounted for 51.6% and proteins 15% of TEI. Women with substantially increased WC (≥88 cm; 77.2%), carbohydrates contributed for 45.5% and proteins 19.9% of TEI.

Conclusion: This population shows a high prevalence of excess weight and cardiometabolic risk, as evidenced by BMI and waist circumference. Higher energy intake was observed among overweight and obese women; increased waist circumference was associated with a higher proportion of energy from carbohydrates and a lower from protein.
