ANALYSIS OF MORPHOFUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT IN ONCOLOGICAL PATIENTS REFERRED TO THE NUTRITION CLINIC

Rationale: To characterize the nutritional status, body composition, and functional capacity of oncological patients referred to the Nutrition clinic, as well as to determine the prevalence of dynapenia and sarcopenia.
Methods: Cross-sectional observational study with inferential analysis in oncological patients attended in the Nutrition clinic between August and December 2025 at Hospital General Universitario Santa Lucía (Cartagena). Demographic and anthropometric variables (BMI), GLIM nutritional classification, and body composition parameters assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis (ASMI and phase angle) were collected. Muscle function was evaluated using handgrip dynamometry, with dynapenia defined as values <27 kg in men and <16 kg in women, according to EWGSOP2 criteria.
Results: A total of 74 patients were included, with a mean age of 67.1 ± 11.3 years. The most frequent tumor types were colorectal (39.2%), followed by head and neck (31.1%), biliopancreatic (17.6%), and lung (12.2%).
BMI was assessed in 73 patients: 38.4% were normal weight, 30.1% overweight, 17.8% obese, and 13.7% underweight. According to GLIM criteria, 70.2% presented disease-related malnutrition, with 32.4% classified as moderate and 37.8% as severe.
Muscle strength was evaluated in 61 patients, revealing dynapenia in 49.2% and confirmed sarcopenia in 18.9%.
The mean ASMI was 7.16 ± 1.33 kg/m², and the mean phase angle was 5.28 ± 1.01°. The phase angle differed significantly between tumor groups (p = 0.004), with lower values observed in biliopancreatic tumors.
Conclusion: Oncological patients exhibit a high prevalence of malnutrition and muscle deterioration. BMI does not adequately discriminate nutritional or functional status. The phase angle showed significant differences between tumor groups, suggesting its potential clinical utility in morphofunctional assessment.
