ACCEPTABILITY, TOLERANCE & COMPLIANCE OF A PLANT BASED PAEDIATRIC ENTERAL TUBE FEED WITH FOOD DERIVED INGREDIENTS

Rationale: The trend of using homemade food via feeding tubes has gained popularity among caregivers and parents of children requiring long-term tube feeding. A growing body of evidence supports the safety and tolerability of tube feeds that contain food-derived ingredients (FDI), exhibited improved gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms.

Methods: Single centre prospective study to assess GI tolerance of a plant based enteral formula with FDI: Compleat Paediatric Plant Based. The study assessed the efficacy and GI tolerance over a period of at least 7 days.GI symptoms assessed included constipation, diarrhoea, reflux and abdominal distention.  Ethical approval HRA: 25/YH/0221

Results: 16 children consented to the study. Of these, 9/16(56%) children were females. Median age was 8.9years (IQR:1.1,10.3). 5/16 (31%) were diagnosed with neurological condition, 4/15 (24%) cardiac condition and 2/12 (12%) high dose chemo for cancer treatment. 13/16 (75%) received formula via a nasogastric tube, 2/16 (13%) via jejunum and 1/16 (6%) via gastrostomy. The mean time on formula was 22 (6SD) days. The mean weight for age z-score at baseline was -1.31 (0.9SD) compared to -1.14 (0.6SD) at the end of study. 9/16 (56%) reported an improvement in GI symptoms, of these, 4 children had improved loose stools; 4 improved constipation and 1 improved abdominal distension. 

Conclusion: Compleat Paediatric Plant Based was well tolerated in children with complex condition requiring enteral nutrition. Compliance was optimal which was reflected in the improved nutritional status of children during the short study period.
