QUALITY INDICATORS ON ORAL NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTATION IN OLDER OUTPATIENTS IN BRAZIL

Rationale: The prevalence of malnutrition in Brazil is high¹. One in three outpatients is malnourished^2, and in this group, high-quality oral nutritional supplementation (ONS) is essential¹. Aim: to evaluate the quality indicators of ONS in older outpatients.

Methods: A multicentric, retrospective, observational study with older outpatients in four different health institutions (HI) in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Goiânia, and Campinas, Brazil. Different protocols were applied: calf circumference assessment (CC) and MAN short form, ONS compliance, and food intake, all verified by a dietitian.

Results: A sample of 207 patients was included (55% female, 74 ± 8 years); the main chronic diseases were hypertension (62%), diabetes (41%), and stroke (35%). Three HI applied the MAN-SF protocol, and 92% of the outpatients were malnourished or at nutritional risk (mean MAN-SF: 9 ± 2). All the HI measured CC, and 40% were classified as low CC (mean CC: 32 ± 4.8) cm. Only 55% of outpatients with malnutrition/nutritional risk by MAN-SF and 33% of outpatients with low CC received ONS. Among outpatients on ONS, 73% were prescribed one bottle/day. All the HI measured food and ONS intake

Conclusion: The prevalence of malnutrition/nutritional risk in older outpatients in three HI in Brazil is high. Half of older patients with malnutrition received ONS. Therefore, we highlight that nutritional risk assessment protocols and ONS compliance for older outpatients are essential for improving quality indicators on ONS.
