DIETARY ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY AND WELLNESS: EVALUATING THE LINKS WITH SLEEP QUALITY, STRESS, AND ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS

Rationale: This study aimed to determine the dietary antioxidant consumption (ORAC) of young adults and investigate its relationship with sleep quality, perceived stress, and anthropometrics. As this is an ongoing study, preliminary results are presented.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 90 Turkish university students (aged 18–45), excluding those with chronic diseases, regular medication, or Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) contraindications.Dietary data from 3-day food records were analyzed via BEBIS software. Body composition and anthropometrics were measured using a TANITA MC-580 BIA analyzer, while sleep quality and stress were evaluated using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Data were analyzed via SPSS 21.0.
Results: Participants had a mean ORAC was 2355.50±281.89, PSS was 11.71±0.31, and PSQI was 7.05±0.28. Mean fiber intake was 11.34±0.51 g/day, falling below recommended guidelines. Participants with poor sleep quality (PSQI>5) exhibited significantly higher stress scores (Z=-3.678 and p<0.001), which was supported by a significant moderate positive correlation between continuous PSS and PSQI scores (ρ=0.455 and p<0.001).No statistically significant differences were found between men and women regarding PSS, fiber, ORAC, or PSQI scores (p>0.05). PSQI scores showed no significant correlation with ORAC, fiber, BMI, or body fat (p>0.05).However, fiber intake correlated positively with ORAC values (p<0.05), and a weak negative correlation was found between waist-to-hip ratio and ORAC (ρ=-0.226 and p=0.032).
Conclusion: Preliminary findings indicate that psychological stress, rather than gender, body composition, or dietary habits, is the primary driver of poor sleep quality.While low fiber and antioxidant intakes were prevalent, higher fiber consumption linked directly to increased ORAC values and a healthier waist-to-hip ratio.
