Rationale: Malnutrition is a major complication in children with CKD, leading to poor growth, delayed development, and adverse outcomes. However, data on peadiatric CKD nutrition in Sri Lanka remain limited.
Methods:
Results: Malnutrition was highly prevalent (78.3%) among participants. Short stature affected 65.2%, while 35.9% had wasting/thinness. Protein-energy wasting (PEW) was identified in 43.5% of cases. Anemia was present in 55% of children. Inadequate energy and protein intake were observed in 89.1% and 70.7%, respectively. CKD stage was significantly associated with wasting/thinness (p=0.032), and treatment modality was linked to nutritional status (p=0.002), with better outcomes in post-transplant patients. Early onset of CKD was significantly associated with short stature (p=0.009).
Conclusion: Malnutrition is common in children with CKD, especially in advanced stages. Disease onset, severity, and treatment type influence nutritional status. Early detection, regular monitoring, and targeted multidisciplinary care are essential to improve growth and outcomes.
