DEVELOPMENT OF A DIGITAL THERAPEUTIC EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR PEDIATRIC HOME PARENTERAL NUTRITION

Rationale: Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) enables children with chronic intestinal failure to be managed at home but requires parents to acquire complex care skills. Training is multidisciplinary and the transition from hospital to home remains delicate and challenging. Therefore, structured and accessible educational tools are essential, with digital approaches providing additional value.

Methods: Existing paper-based educational materials were collected, reviewed and adapted into a digital format. Development drew on insights from immersion at a parenteral nutrition production site, clinical observations and active participation in parent training sessions. Feedback from a parent expert caring for a child on HPN was systematically integrated. The resulting tool was further validated by a multiprofessional healthcare team.

Results: A centralized digital platform was developed, incorporating interactive and visual resources (checklists, images, videos). The program covers core principles of parenteral nutrition, delivery and storage, preparation and administration, complication management, medication use and daily life situations such as school, physical activity and travel. Preliminary feedback from the parent expert and healthcare professionals indicates high usability, satisfaction and improved confidence in managing HPN.

Conclusion: This digital therapeutic education program represents a flexible, reproducible, and scalable tool for both healthcare professionals and families. By facilitating a safer and smoother transition to home care, it improves patient safety, autonomy and quality of life. Its modular design enables adaptation across diverse institutional settings and patient populations. Future development aims to support international deployment and multilingual expansion.
