DIETARY PATTERNS AND CARDIOMETABOLIC BIOMARKERS IN YOUNG ADULT MEN: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Rationale: Dietary patterns (DPs) are increasingly recognized as important determinants of cardiometabolic health, yet evidence linking them with lipid profile and liver biomarkers in young adult men remains limited. This study aimed to identify dietary patterns and assess their associations with lipid profile and metabolic biomarkers in men aged 18–49.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2022 among 90 men. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) covering 145 food items. Blood serum biomarkers included total cholesterol (TC), HDL, LDL, triglycerides (TG), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), AST/ALT ratio, and creatine (CR). DPs were identified using principal component analysis. Statistical analyses included correlation and logistic regression.

Results: Three dietary patterns were identified: plant-based and sweet (PS), high-fat and processed (HFP), and protein-rich and whole grain (PR-WG). The HFP pattern was positively correlated with TC (r=0.270), LDL (r=0.282), AST (r=0.252), ALT (r=0.331), and negatively with AST/ALT ratio (r=-0.327). Creatine was negatively correlated with PS (r=-0.344) and positively with PR-WG (r=0.230). In regression models, the HFP pattern was associated with 2% higher risk of increased TG and, in crude models, 2% higher TC and LDL levels. The PR-WG pattern was associated with a 2% lower risk of elevated TG.

Conclusion: A high-fat and processed dietary pattern was linked to less favorable lipid profile and liver enzymes, while a protein-rich, whole grain pattern was associated with lower triglycerides. These findings support the role of diet quality in early cardiometabolic risk prevention.
