Rationale: Gastrointestinal cancers, including pancreatic cancer, cause malnutrition. This study analyzes the nutritional status of patients with pancreatic cancer through a multi-month follow-up.
Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of the medical history records of patients operated on at the Dept.of General Surgery,Liver Surgery, and Transplant Surgery at University Hospital No.1in Bydgoszcz in2021,subsequently treated with chemotherapy, and followed at the Oncology Center in Bydgoszcz until2025.Changes in the NRSscale and body weight were analyzed.
Results: Among1886patients hospitalized in the clinic,1087patients underwent surgery,including68patients with pancreatic cancer:48(69.5%)underwent radical treatment,7(10%)underwent palliative procedure,and14(20.5%)underwent palliative ERCP.Before surgery, the mean age of the patients was69years (48-92),of whom38 were♀ ,30were♂.The mean body weight before surgery was70kg(43-100),BMI was25(13-39).The mean hospitalization time was14days(3-86).6(8.7%)patient deaths were observed.NRS total before surgery:1-2(3%);2-17(26%);3-33(49%); 4-9(13%);5-6(8%);6-1(1%).NRS total score of3points or more:71%.Of63patients referred for chemotherapy,24began treatment. At baseline,6patients(25%)experienced an↑in body weight compared to their pre-operative weight,while18patients(75%)experienced a↓of5-20%.Body weight was then assessed after6months-3patients↑weight,18↓weight,and 3patients did not return for further treatment. Assessments were recorded 1and2years after diagnosis in2patients,but remained unchanged.In11patients,the NRS-2002assessment was performed after3-6months:10patients got 2points;1patient got 3points.
Conclusion: In71%of patients, the NRS-2002scale demonstrated malnutrition, requiring nutritional intervention.Nutritional status during pancreatic cancer treatment is dynamic;in most cases, the treatment leads to progressive malnutrition despite intensive dietary and nutritional care.
