POST-BARIATRIC MUSCLE LOSS IS PARTIALLY REVERSED BY RESISTANCE TRAINING: A 12-WEEK FOLLOW-UP

Rationale: Post-bariatric lean mass loss may compromise long-term health outcomes, given the integral function of muscle tissue in metabolic regulation, mobility, and overall physiological balance. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of resistance training (RT) on patients who submitted to gastric bypass (GB) on total body mass, muscle mass, and fat mass (pre-surgery, post-surgery, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks of RT after post-surgery) measured by bioimpedance.

Methods: The study was developed with 21 GB women undergoing RT sessions. Body composition was evaluated in five periods. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Software and presented descriptive analysis and Friedman test, considering statistical significance p-value = 0.05.

Results: Body Mass and Fat Body Mass showed significant progressive reductions at P1, P2, P3 and P4 when compared with P0. Lean Body Mass, after a large loss between P1 and P0, showed a significant progressive increase in P2, P3 and P4 when compared with measurements at P0 (Figure 1).

Conclusion: Despite the progressive loss of BM during the follow-up period, LBM had a significant reduction in P1. Resistance training was able to recover part of the depleted lean mass (P2-P4), corroborating the importance of RT in the recovery of post-bariatric patients.
