Rationale: Energy drinks are beverages that are marketed to boost energy, increase physical performance, and enhance mental alertness and concentration. The rapid growth of their consumption has become a significant trend in the soft drinks market. Energy drinks can have a disruptive effect on the body clock, leading to reduced total sleep time. The study sought to investigate the association of energy drink consumption with demographics and chronotypes among Saudi population.
Methods: A total of 393 adults aged ≥18 years from the general public in Saudi Arabia completed a structured, self-administered online survey between October and December 2023. The survey included questions assessing demographics, chronotype and energy drink consumption. Chronotype was assessed using the reduced version of the original Horne and Ostberg morningness-eveningness questionnaire (MEQ)1.
Results: 23.4 % of the participants were energy drinks consumers. The study shows that sex, age, and marital status are associated with energy drink consumption. Body mass index and smoking status were also associated with energy drink consumption. On the other hand, there was no significant association between energy drinks and chronotype (see table 1)
Table 1: Demographics and chronotype of the study sample stratified by energy drink consumption.to energy drink consumption.

Conclusion: Almost one-third of the participants reported that they were energy drinks consumers. Consumption of energy drinks was associated with sex, age, marital status, body mass index and smoking.
