SCREENING THE NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF PATIENTS APPLYING TO THE POLYCLINIC USING DIFFERENT SCALES AND EVALUATING ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH PATIENT FRAILTY

Rationale: Identifying potential nutritional deficiencies in patients is crucial for managing nutrition-related health problems.
Methods: This study included individuals aged ≥60 years who presented to the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic between November 2024 and March 2025.Three different screening tools were used to assess the nutritional status of the patients: Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF), the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST), and he Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI).The frailty of the patients was assessed using the FRAIL scale.
Results: Of the 52 patients included in the study, 55.8% (n=29) were female.According to the MUST scale, 84.6% (n=44) of the patients were not at risk of malnutrition, while 11.5% (n=6) were in the "moderate risk" category.According to MNA-SF, 17.3% (n=9) of the patients were in the "normal nutritional status" category and 67.3% (n=35) were in the "risk of malnutrition" category.According to GNRI, 86.5% (n=45) of patients had no risk of malnutrition, while 9.6% (n=5) had "low risk" and 3.8% (n=2) had "moderate risk".A moderately significant negative correlation was found between FRAIL and MNA-SF and GNRI scores (p<0.001 and p=0.004, respectively), but no significant correlation was found with MUST (p>0.05). In addition, MNA-SF scores showed a significant difference according to gender (p<0.008): the average score for men was 1.44 units higher than the average score for women.While a moderately significant negative correlation was observed between age and GNRI (p=0.029), no significant correlation was found with MNA-SF and MUST (p>0.05).
Conclusion: This study revealed that varying results can be obtained using different measurement tools, and it is suggested that evaluating patients' nutritional status using multiple scales during routine follow-ups may be beneficial.
