THE EFFECT OF KRILL OIL ON INTESTINAL TIGHT-JUNCTION PROTEINS IN AN EXPERIMENTAL ULCERATIVE COLITIS MODEL

Rationale: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of krill oil supplementation on body weight, colon morphology and tight junction proteins in a dextran sulphate sodium (DSS) induced colitis model.
Methods: In this study, 60 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: a control group without any intervention, a colitis group (UC) with colitis induced by DSS, a krill oil group (KO) receiving krill oil supplementation (500 mg/kg/day), and a group with colitis induced by DSS and krill oil supplementation (UC+KO). Body weights were monitored throughout the experiment, and colon and blood samples were taken at the end of the experiment.
Results: At the end of the experiment, the UC group showed a significantly higher body weight loss (-17.1±14.6 g) compared to the other groups (p<0,001). The colitis group also had a shorter colon length (11.2±1.9 cm) and a lower colon weight (1.21±0.25 g) compared to the other groups (p=0.019 and p<0.001, respectively)(Figure1). ZO-1, claudin, and occludin tight junction protein levels, which play a role in intestinal barrier integrity, were lower in the UC group, while they were significantly higher in the UC+KY group (p<0.001).

Conclusion: Krill oil supplementation increased tight junction protein levels in an experimental colitis model. These findings suggest that krill oil may have positive effects on structural parameters associated with the intestinal barrier.
