Rationale: The proportion of women with menstrual problems is high. Many of them also suffer from gastrointestinal problems. The MeMaF project combines digital (app) and multimodal treatment. As part of the project, an anti-inflammatory diet was developed to alleviate participants' gastrointestinal symptoms.

Methods: MeMaF is a randomized clinical trial conducted at the Charité Berlin. Participants who do not experience sufficient improvement after three months of the app use will be treated by a clinical team. As part of nutritional therapy, they received an experimental anti-inflammatory diet. Nutritional counseling was based on an individualized approach. Until now participants received a plant-based, cycle-dependent, low-histamine, and low-sugar diet. The focus of the development of the diet was on gastrointestinal symptoms and their improvement.

Results: This clinical trial is ongoing and will end in February 2026. Therefore, to date, 44 participants have already received professional nutritional counseling with an anti-inflammatory diet. More than half of the participants suffered from nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea and Endobelly. So far, the frequently prescribed diet was: plant-based, high in-fiber, reduced in meat and wheat consumption, increased fish consumption reduction of histamine and of sugar, consideration of individual intolerances at the first session. We estimate that by the end of the study, 220 participants will be treated with the multimodal therapy (with follow-up counseling).

Conclusion: MeMaF is a novel app-based multimodal care concept that contributes to the relief of menstrual discomfort in girls and young women. Nutritional therapy with a specifically developed anti-inflammatory diet, could be play an important role in alleviating participants' gastrointestinal complaints.
