Rationale: Cachexia is recognized as a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in cancer patients. Since quality of life (QOL) is one of the important endpoints of cachexia treatment, assessing QOL is crucial. The FAACT scale is a cancer cachexia-specific QOL assessment tool which consists of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) and the Anorexia-Cachexia Subscale (A/CS). The aim of this study is to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the FAACT scale.

Methods: A standardized multilingual translation and validation methodology was employed for the FACIT Measurement System. The study employed various assessment tools, including the Patient Information Form, as well as the NRS-2002, the Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS), the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS), the EQ-5D-5L, the FACT-G, and the FAACT scale. Following translation, the FAACT-TR version was evaluated for reliability and validity. Statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS version 21.0. Results were considered statistically significant at the 5% critical level (p < 0.05) .

Results: A total of 200 patients, aged between 18 and 86 years, were included in the study. To evaluate internal consistency as part of the reliability analysis, the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the FAACT questionnaire was 0.887, with subscale values ranging from 0.278 to 0.815. Criterion-related validity results showed that there were statistically significant relationships between FAACT and KPS, ESAS, EQ-5D-5L scores. These results support concurrent validity of the translated scale.

Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the Turkish version of the FAACT scale is a reliable and valid tool for assessing the quality of life in cancer patients with anorexia and cachexia. The FAACT-TR version can be used in clinical and research in Turkish-speaking populations.
