DIETARY PATTERNS AND CARDIOMETABOLIC RISK IN WOMEN LIVING IN VERA CRUZ, BAHIA.

Rationale: Inadequate dietary patterns are a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This study aimed to investigate the association between anthropometric parameters, dietary patterns and cardiometabolic risk, among women living in Vera Cruz.
Methods: Cross-sectional observational study conducted in non-pregnant women aged ≥18 years (n=217). Anthropometric and body composition data (bioelectrical impedance-InBody120) were collected. Nutritional status was classified using BMI (kg/m²) according to WHO and PAHO criteria. Cardiometabolic risk assessed by waist circumference (≥80 cm), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR ≥0.5), body fat percentage, and sarcopenia (appendicular skeletal muscle mass index/height <5.5 kg/m²). Dietary intake was evaluated using a 24-hr dietary recall and VIGITEL food frequency questionnaire. Regular consumption defined as ≥5 times/week. Data analyzed using Stata 17.0 (p≤0.05).
Results: 80.2% of the participants were overweight and 44.2% obese. High cardiometabolic risk was observed, with 88% presenting WC ≥80cm and 87.5% WHtR ≥0.5. In body composition subsample (n=52), 80.7% had body fat ≥30%; 3 women met criteria for sarcopenia. Regular consumption of unprocessed foods was reported for beans (51.6%), vegetables (38.3%), fruits (52.5%) and natural juices (43.7%); 17% reported regular intake of sweetened beverages, which was positively associated with WHtR. Mean energy intake was 2034 kcal±113.8, with an adequate macronutrient distribution (carbohydrates: 46%; protein: 21%; lipids: 33%). Saturated fat intake (12% of total energy) exceeded recommended levels for individuals at increased cardiovascular risk (<7% of total energy).
Conclusion: High prevalence of overweight, obesity, and cardiometabolic risk was observed, particularly reflected by markers of abdominal adiposity (WC, WHtR). Excessive sweetened beverages and saturated fat intake highlight the need for targeted dietary interventions.
