Rationale: The SYNCHRONIZE+ intervention is set to improve quality of life in fibromyalgia (FM) patients by enhancing diet quality, chronobiology and physical functionality.
This study aimed to collaboratively design the intervention by exploring patients’ needs and suggestions regarding therapy groups to ensure its success.
Methods: A qualitative study was carried out in primary care with a descriptive phenomenological perspective. Five focus groups (FGs) (two pre-intervention FGs and three post-intervention FGs) were conducted from September 2021 until April 2023, with individuals suffering from FM. Participants in post-intervention FGs were required to complete intervention. Data were analysed using thematic analysis.
Results: Participants (n=27) were predominantly women (88.89%) and have been dealing with FM for 6.2 years. Mean age was 48.2 years and 48% were employed. Seven major themes emerged, three of them during the pre-intervention FGs and four in the post-intervention FGs: (i) Primary Care Assistance, (ii) Perceptions of health/support, (iii) Contributions for intervention design, (iv) Opinions about intervention, (v) Use of health components, (vi) Contributions for improvement, (vii) Perceived barriers to participation.
A shorter-format intervention, designed to accommodate working individuals, was well received by participants. They particularly valued in-depth content on chronobiology and nutrition. Additionally, participants contributed to developing educational materials, including a leaflet summarizing key concepts in nutrition and chronobiology and a fridge magnet illustrating the healthy plate and core guidelines.
Conclusion: The study effectively refined the intervention design and educational materials by incorporating participants’ needs, leading to meaningful improvements and a real change in their health. This is key to ensuring intervention success and treatment adherence.
