Rationale: The European project MENTORING: Addressing Malnutrition and Metabolic Health in Lung Cancer Patients through Precision Nutrition (HORIZON EICPathfinder Challenges 2023, 101162297) aims to develop personalised nutrition recommendations to improve the nutritional status and quality of life of lung cancer patients. Within this project, the clinical study LISTENING: Unveiling malnutrition and metabolic changes in lung cancer patients: setting the basis for precision nutrition models has been launched.

Methods: A prospective, open-label, uncontrolled, non-interventional study. Multicentre recruitment includes lung cancer patients from the University Hospital of Parma (Parma, Italy) and the Infanta Sofía University Hospital (Madrid, Spain), as well as a cohort of volunteers without cancer as a control group, recruited through the GENYAL Clinical Trials Platform at IMDEA Nutrition (Madrid, Spain). The clinical trial has been approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the IMDEA Nutrition Foundation under identifier PI-068 and is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov under identifier NCT07486947. During the study, biological samples, anthropometric data, and diet and lifestyle questionnaires are collected. 

Results: To date, 85 patients have been recruited from both hospitals, along with 60 volunteers as a control group. A high proportion of the recruited patients were found to be malnourished at diagnosis, as assessed using GLIM criteria. Genetic profiling has been carried out to identify genetic variations associated with metabolic health and nutritional status.

Conclusion: The exploratory results suggest possible associations between genetic factors and the severity of malnutrition at diagnosis, supporting the development of precision nutrition strategies.
