EVALUATION OF MALNUTRITION STATUS, MUSCLE STRENGTH, AND MUSCLE MASS IN OLDER ADULTS AT RISK OF SARCOPENIA

Rationale: The aim of this study was evaluate malnutrition status, muscle strength, and muscle mass in older adults for sarcopenia risk.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 107 older adults. Risk of sarcopenia and malnutrition was evaluated using the A Simple Questionnaire to Rapidly Diagnose Sarcopenia and Mini Nutritional Assessment tool. Muscle strength was measured using dynamometer. Body composition was determined and anthropometric measurements (body weight, triceps skinfold thickness, upper arm and waist circumferences) were taken by the researchers using standard techniques.
Results: The study included 107 older adults; mean age was 71.5 ± 6.0 for women (n:53) and 73.54 ± 6.8 for men (n:54). Sarcopenia risk was higher in men (96.3%) than women (90.6%). It was determined that 33.6 % of older adults were at risk of malnutrition (women:37.8%; men: 35.2%).Individuals at risk of sarcopenia were higher malnutrition (29.4%) and at risk of malnutrition (47.1%) than those with no risk of sarcopenia (malnutrition: 8.9%; at risk of malnutrition: 33.3%)(p<0.05). Body weight (RS: 75.9±12.6 kg;NRS:73.8±15.4 kg) was lower, while upper arm circumference (RS:30.3±3.5 cm; NRS:29.5±4.0 cm),waist circumference (RS:101.4±10.0 cm; NRS:98.8±12.4 cm), triceps skinfold thickness (RS:13.5±4.6 cm; NRS:12.6±9.3 cm), fat mass (SR:24.0±9.0 cm; NRS:22.3±8.5 cm), fat percentage (SR:33.8±7.3;NRS:31.7±7.8) were higher in the sarcopenia risk group(p>0.05).Handgrip strength (14.9±4.7 kg) was significantly lower sarcopenia risk group(14.9±4.7 kg) (p<0.001).Individuals at risk of sarcopenia were higher obese (29.4%) and overweight (35.3%) than than no risk of sarcopenia (obese: 24.4%;overweight: 38.9%).
Conclusion: In older adults, malnutrition significantly correlates with sarcopenia risk, whereas the coexistence of increased fat mass and low handgrip strength may reflect the clinical manifestation of sarcopenic obesity.
